Most accidents at work are not caused by one big mistake. They happen when small things are left as they are: a trailing cable, a box on the stairs, a spill nobody mopped up. That is why safety is part of everyone’s job, not only the manager’s.
Your employer must provide a safe place to work, training and the right equipment. In return, you are expected to:
- follow the safety instructions and training you are given
- use equipment and protective clothing the way you were shown
- report anything that looks unsafe, even if it seems minor
- look out for the people around you
In practice: if you see a hazard you can fix safely in a few seconds, such as closing a drawer or moving a box off a walkway, do it. If you can’t, warn others and report it.
